Having the chance to be photographed next to some of the world's biggest supermodels for a project as prestigious as the Pirelli calendar would be enough to fill anyone with dread, but not Alexander Wang. The designer, who will act as Gigi Hadid's best friend and confidant in the calendar, explained that he simply decided to trust Scottish photographer Albert Watson's vision. "The great thing about working with Albert is that he's calm and he knows exactly what he wants," Wang told Vogue. "He kind of gives you very clear directions, it's almost meditative. I can't explain it, you kind of just fall into the picture, so it was very pleasant and easy working with him."
The 2019 Pirelli calendar, which was shot in April, will also feature stars including Misty Copeland and French actress and model Laetitia Casta. Watson, who has shot over 100 Vogue covers and taken some of the most well-recognized photographs in the world - including the portrait of a nude 19-year-old Kate Moss - was the one who initially asked Wang to be a part of the famous project. "I mean, I would have to be crazy to say no," the designer said. "I've worked with Albert on our campaign and so he was actually the one that initially asked me. I was really taken aback. It's such a prestigious project, and it was such an honor to work on the calendar with Albert and the entire team."
The result? A series of gorgeously dramatic photos shot at the Carlyle Hotel in New York, where Wang is posing in his uniform: an all-black look composed of a hoodie, pants, and sneakers.
