No, We're Not Getting a Remake of The Shining - but We ARE Getting a Sequel

Warner Bros. is chugging right along with the film adaptation of The Shining's sequel. Based on Stephen King's 2013 book, Doctor Sleep, the story follows Danny Torrance in his adult life. Obviously, he's still a little shaken up by everything that went down at the Overlook Hotel all those years ago, but he still has his "shine," and he has bigger foes to face in the present day. Having read the book, I can say it's going to be pretty insane to see this one come to life.

The studio has tapped Mike Flanagan to direct the film. Flanagan is best known for the mind-f*ck 2013 film Oculus and Ouija: Origin of Evil. Even more impressively, Flanagan is responsible for the horror movie Hush, which is one of the best chillers I've ever seen on Netflix. And in the Stephen King universe, he also helmed Gerald's Game, which was VERY good and VERY f*cked up.

As for who's going to play adult Danny? Ewan McGregor. According to Variety, the Fargo actor has officially signed on to the sequel and even has King's blessing to play the character, which is notable since he notoriously hated Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of the original. It will be interesting to see how McGregor interprets the role, which will see him struggling with the same type of issues - alcoholism, anger management - that plagued his troubled father decades earlier. Danny eventually strikes up a psychic connection with a young girl who shares his ability to "shine," which makes her a target of a group that wants to murder people with that gift. Rebecca Ferguson is also in negotiations to costar with McGregor, though her role hasn't been disclosed yet.

All in all, it sounds like the sequel to The Shining is in good hands.
