Fans of Game of Thrones are still sorting out their feelings over that . . . ahem, divisive series finale. But viewers aren't the only ones who endured a whirlwind of emotions over the finale's big moments: the cast themselves were deeply affected by the ending to the story they've been playing out for 10 years, and we got to see their reactions thanks to a special behind-the-scenes documentary that aired on Sunday night.
The Last Watch, a HBO documentary that chronicles the final season while paying tribute to its crew members, provided intimate glimpses of the cast's very last table read. You thought you were in your feelings about Daenerys's death at the hands of Jon Snow? Kit Harington was visibly shocked and even had to hold back his tears when he realized what was going down. The actor hadn't read any of the scripts for the final season before the table read, so he was one of the only people in the room who didn't know how the Dragon Queen's story ended. Emilia Clarke, who revealed to Entertainment Weekly that she purposefully sat across from Harington during the reading so that she could witness his initial reaction, sadly nodded her head when the other actor locked eyes with her before she comically slid down in her seat and waggled those infamous brows of hers.
Of course, Daenerys's death wasn't the only scene to get a major reaction out of the rest of the cast. When Arya's defeat of the Night King is read by series writer Bryan Cogman, the table erupts into applause with Rory McCann (who plays the Hound) loudly cheering for his character's travel companion. Actor Conleth Hill is comforted by Lena Headey and Gwendoline Christie during the solemn reading of Varys's death scene. The small peeks are just enough to make any fan want to see all the table reads, just to see how the Game of Thrones cast reacted to some of the other wild moments from the final season.
Filmed by documentarian Jeanie Finaly, The Last Watch also highlighted the immense amount of work that went into the show's ending. It even ventured behind-the-scenes of the Battle of Winterfell, the nearly three-month shoot that Jorah Mormont actor Ian Glen described as the "most unpleasant experience I've had on Thrones." Considering all the prep work the crew put into the third episode, it's a damn shame we could barely even see it.
The documentary definitely had a profound affect on fans who praised Game of Thrones for giving recognition to the stars behind-the-scenes for all their hard work. Check out their reactions ahead, especially to that emotional exchange between Harington and Clarke!
