Elle Fanning's wardrobe at this year's Cannes Film Festival is flawless. Thanks to her stylist, Samantha McMillen, Elle has been serving some seriously glamorous old Hollywood moments on the red carpet. Just take a look at her 1950s-inspired custom Dior outfit worn at the Once Upon a Time In Hollywood screening, which took 450 hours to make. Yes, you read that correctly, 450 hours.
"200 hours were spent on the skirt alone - which required 50 meters (164 feet) of tulle - and 150 were spent on the shirt," InStyle reports. The outfit was an homage to the legacy of Christian Dior and his masterwork, The New Look. Dior's signature hourglass shape, which debuted in 1947, became the defining silhouette of the 1950s. The New Look also debuted a year after the very first Cannes Film Festival – coincidence? We think not. This ensemble is full of references.
For Elle's custom creation, Maria Grazia Chiuri took Dior's classic monochrome bar suit and revamped it with sheer princess tulle and silk organza bishop sleeves, both of which are trends to watch for 2019. Princess tulle is definitely Grazia Chiuri's signature at Dior. The sweet, feminine fabric has been seen all over this year's red carpets - from the Oscars, to the Golden Globes, the Met Gala and now Cannes. Smocked tulle is a trend that's been bubbling up for the past two seasons and is widely credited to British designer Molly Goddard after Rihanna wore one of her dresses that went viral.
We'll definitely be taking some styling tips from this outfit and opt for dark blue, instead of black, when piecing together a classic monochrome look. And if you've ever wondered how to wear a sheer top without being too revealing, try focusing on proportions. Although Elle's blouse is slightly see-through, the long bishop sleeves, ankle length skirt, and pointed-toe black pumps make this outfit extremely sophisticated.
