Bode Miller, former Team USA skier and current NBC commentator, really put his foot in his mouth on Feb. 14 while discussing Austrian slalom skier Anna Veith's career. So what exactly did he say to make everyone nearly spit out their Valentine's Day meal? That, even though she tore her ACL, the cause of her career struggles over the last few years can be chalked up to one reason: she got married.
"I want to point out she also got married. And it's historically very challenging to race on the World Cup with a family or after being married," he said.
Yes, he really said that. And let's get one thing straight: he's really the last person who should be making jokes after his infamously disastrous 2014 custody battle with his ex-girlfriend Sara McKenna. We really thought he would have learned his lesson then, but NOPE.
He decided to further clarify his remarks on Twitter account, which has now been made totally private: "I was not seriously blaming Anna Veith's lack of results on her husband."
And surprise, surprise, the entire internet totally ripped him one:
I'm sorry, did Bode Miller just say that a woman might not be able to perform well because of her marriage responsibilities? AND THAT WENT UNCHALLENGED?!?!? @NBCOlympics

Did anyone else hear @MillerBode mansplain why a skier was doing poorly bc she got married this year? @NBCOlympics no one would say that about a male skier. #shame

So Bode Miller said one of the female skiers hasn't been performing as well since she got married. And then passed it off as "Oh, I meant it as a joke." Uh huh. 🙄 This was the best you could do, @NBCOlympics?

Uh, yeah, mansplaining is right. After cutting to a commercial break, Miller issued an apology laced with the undertones women know all too well: I was joking.
"I was an athlete that competed after marriage, and I know how beneficial it is. I know the support team you need. On Valentines Day, I did not mean to throw spouses under the bus, and I'm going to be hearing it from my wife, I know."
Now only one question remains: if you know, then why'd you say it?
