Facebook Launches $10 Million Grant Program For Community Leaders

It has been less than a year since Facebook first announced a shift in focus toward community-based groups and a new mission of bringing the world closer together, but it's already bringing that proposition to the next level.

On Feb. 9, the social media juggernaut announced the Facebook Community Leadership program, a set of grants that seeks to put $10 million in the hands of community creators and leaders who need it most. "Five people from around the world who already use Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, or Oculus to bring people together will get up to $1 million to fund new ideas, and 100 people will get up to $50,000," Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg explained in a post announcing the program, adding, "They'll also get training and mentorship to help bring their projects to life."

In addition to the grants, Facebook will be continuing to ramp up its Community Leadership Circles - events that bring leaders together to connect and collaborate - and expanding Groups for Facebook Power Admins, allowing more individuals to share feedback and tips as Facebook continues to expand the tools available to these users.
